The ESF are pleased to be hosting a key event at the House of Lords to recognise the outstanding academic achievements of some of our young sports people who have combined their professional sporting aspirations with the completion of University and College Degrees and Diplomas. It will also highlight the work of the ESF who have assisted young sports people acquire knowledge and skills to help them succeed in life both during and after their sporting careers.
The ESF is delighted to have helped provide those educational opportunities to many members of its affiliated sporting organisations from across the breadth of professional sport. The ESF work supplements the long-standing and excellent traditions of their affiliate members in making sure young athletes have a sound education provided alongside their vocational training and this event intends to celebrate these achievements.
Another important aspect of the event will be to launch the brand new web site of HIVsport, developed with the help of SSL International plc. With thousands of England fans on their way to South Africa next year and with HIV and AIDS still a fundamental health threat to individuals, families and communities across the world, there is an essential need for increased awareness of HIV infection. HIV/AIDS still cannot be cured and has to date killed over 20 million people. With a further 33 million people infected and over 6 million in South Africa alone it is essential that we continue the progress that has been made to date with effective prevention and treatment programmes. HIVsport aims to bring a greater awareness of HIV/AIDS to a wider audience both in and through sport. The ESF has supported HIVsport from Day One of their inception and it is that support which has enabled them to make the progress we have in the short time they have been in existence. Already confirmed as a speaker is Barry McGuigan.
The audience will be a mixture of politicians, health and education policy-makers, ESF affiliates and other key supporters of our two organisations and ?we are delighted to host the event at such a prestigious venue? said CEO, Alan Irwin.
