Both Ricky Hopkins, National Project Co-ordinator for the GFTU and Alan Irwin, Chief Executive of the Educational Sports Forum, organised this day in the North West to work with those employed in the racing industry. The event was held at the Middleham Key Centre which will they are hoping will become a centre for continued education for those working in the racing industry. This was a dissemination event to explain the type of courses on offer, e.g. improving maths and english, learning about computing, life skills such as CV writing and personal development plans. Surveys were handed out to those attending the event in order to provide the ESF and the GFTU with the information they need to organise and provide the training requested. The event venue allowed Ricky and Alan to set a laptop system up in the centre to allow attendees to try the National Test Toolkit and for them to get a better idea of the stringent demands of those working in the industry. The key message from those attending was that education providers need to be aware of the working hours and nature of racing work and to ensure that people are given every opportunity to complete courses without too much interference to their work commitments.
